Coca Cola Co. announced its $2.2 billion acquisition of a 16.7% stake in Monster Beverage Corp. as the world’s soda maker expands its fast growing energy drinks business. Under the deal Coca Cola will have two own two directors seats on Monster’s board. Coke will also transfer ownership of its energy business, which includes brands such as Full Throttle and Burn to Monster. While Monster will transfer the right to its non-energy drink unit for brands including Hansen’s Natural Sodas and Pea Tea. Under the terms of the deal Monster brands will be the only energy drinks Coca Cola distributes and Coke will be Monsters sole global distributor.
