HP unveiled a new computer project from HP Labs, code named "The Machine"m at its consumer conference in Vegas. If successful the Machine, could replace a giant data center worth of gear with a computer no bigger than a refrigerator. The computer will also instantly process mind boggling amounts of data, while only using a tiny amount of energy. According to HP CEO Meg Whitman, "energy consumption problems will virtually disappear" for data centers. Compared to today, if cloud computer were a nation, in terms of energy uses, it could rank fifth in the world, according to Whitman. The computer uses a homegrown operating system, a new superfast means to transfer data that uses light instead of copper wiring traditionally used by Ethernet cables and a whole new kind of memory called "memristors"
