AT&T is opposing against a shareholder resolution urging the company to report government requests for customer information, calling it impracticable. AT&T says it guards customer privacy, with protection entrusted to the company's management team, according a to letter issued to the SEC. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli and Trillium Asset Management LLC came up with the idea, in an effort to gain more openness about government requests after numerous reports came out this year of internet companies and U.S. carries cooperating with government agencies by sharing customer data. Eric Sumberg, a spokesman for DiNapoli's office said in a statement, "This issue is an important one for customers and shareholders alike and we feel strongly that it should be on AT&T's ballot this spring."
